LAPURAN PESTA PERDANA 1981

Pada tahun ini, Pesta Perdana telah diadakan di bumi Kedah pula iaitu di SMS Kedah, Sg. Petani.  Seperti pada tahun-tahun yang lalu, pada tahun ini 20 buah sekolah berasrama penuh telah mengambil bahagian bagi merebut Piala Perdana Menteri dalam acara perbahasan Bahasa Malaysia dan Bahasa Inggeris dan Piala Sheikh Hamdan Tahir dalam pertandingan bolakeranjang bagi pasukan lelaki dan Piala Toh Puan Zainab dalam pertandingan bolakeranjang bagi pasukan perempuan.

Pesta tersebut telah diadakan pada masa cuti persekolahan penggal pertama iaitu dari 10hb April sehingga 17hb April 1981.  Kontijen Kolej Melayu yang seramai 27 orang pelajar telah bertolak meninggalkan Bandar Di Raja Kuala Kangsar pada pagi 10hb April menuju ke Negeri Jelapang Padi penuh dengan harapan dan cita-cita agar impian akan menjadi kenyataan kelak. Semasa dalam perjalanan, kontijen telah berhenti untuk berihat dan makan tengahari di Seberang Prai.

Bas baru Kolej yang membawa pasukan bahas Bahasa Malaysia dan Bahasa Inggeris serta pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej Melayu telah tiba di perkarangan SMS Kedah pada tepat jam 2.45 petang.  Kontijen Kolej telah ditempatkan di tingkat 4 di asrama putera.

Hari pertama, 11hb April

Pagi-pagi lagi pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah bertemu dengan pasukan SMS Pulau Pinang.  Kolej yang menurunkan pasukan utama nya telah mendapat tentangan yang hebat pada awal permainan.  Akhirnya pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah mencapai kemenangan pertamanya dengan kiraan mata 98 - 66.

Pada pukul 9.30 pagi, perasmian Pesta Perdana ke 8, telah dilaksanakan oleh YB Dato’ Osman Arof, Ahli Exco Undangan Negeri Kedah

Hari kedua, 12hb April

Pada sebelah paginya, pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah bertemu dengan SM Sultan Abdul Halim. Jitra.  Kolej yang pada satu ketika mendahului pihak lawan 29 - 0, pasukan pelapis meneruskan permainan dan berjaya mencapai kemenangan yang kedua apabila wisel penamat dibunyikan dengan jaringan yang menjadi rekod di sepanjang kejohanan ini iaitu 87 - 15.

13hb April

Hujan yang telah turun dari awal pagi telah menyebabkan suasana menjadi agak muram.  Dengan diiringi oleh hujan renyai-renyai inilah, pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah turun menentang SMS Johor.  Pemain pemain dari kedua-dua pasukan telah mendapati sukar mengawal permainan disebabkan oleh keadaan gelanggang yang licin dan basah.  Namun begitu Kolej telah berjaya mengatasi pihak lawan dengan 68 - 34.

14hb April 1981

Jam 8.00 pagi, bertempat di gelanggang D KSAH, pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah bertemu dengan STAR.  Disebabkan tiada perdebatan pada hari ini, seluruh kontijen Kolej telah turut sama menghadirkan diri untuk memberikan sokongan moral kepada pasukan Kolej.  Perlawanan ini merupakan perlawanan yang penting bagi pasukan Kolej untuk menjamin peluangnya ke peringkat akhir kelak.  Dalam perlawanan yang rancak dan penuh aksi ini, kedua-dua pasukan telah menunjukkan permainan yang bersungguh-sungguh.  Hasil dari ini jaringan pada separuh masa pertama ialah seri dengan 29 - 29.  Namun dengan corak permainan yang lebih baik dan teratur dalam separuh masa kedua, disertai dengan sokongan yang begitu kuat dari para penonton, Kolej telah berjaya mendapat kejayaan 44 - 41.

Pada sebelah petangnya pula, perlawanan menentang MTD telah diadakan.  Walaupun para pemain agak keletihan disebabkan perlawanan pada paginya, Kolej telah menunjukkan satu corak permainan yang baik.  MTD tewas di tangan Kolej dengan kiraan mata 64 - 47.

15hb April

Jam 4.30 petang - di gelanggang S Sin Min, pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah bertemu dengan SMS Selangor.  Kolej yang telah layak ke pusingan separuh akhir, menurunkan pasukan pelapis.  Kemenangan sekali lagi dapat dicapai dengan jaringan memihak kepada Kolej 64 - 40.

16hb April

Pada pukul 7.30 pagi, perlawanan separuh akhir bolakeranjang diantara Kolej Melayu menentang tuan rumah SMS Kedah, telah diadakan.  Kedua-dua pasukan telah menunjukkan permainan yang menarik dengan Kolej menunjukkan permainan pantas sepanjang perlawanan.  Dengan sokongan yang hebat dari penyokong-penyokong Kolej, pasukan bolakeranjang Kolej telah berjaya memasuki peringkat akhir setelah menewaskan SMS Kedah 70 - 54.

17hb April

Hari penutup Pesta Perdana.

4.00 petang.  Pertandingan akhir bolakeranjang Piala Tan Sri Sheikh Hamdan Tahir di antara Kolej Melayu dan MTD dimulakan.  Ini kali keempat Kolej Melayu bertemu dengan MTD di perlawanan akhir Piala Hamdan Tahir dalam masa 5 tahun.  Setelah empat puluh minit beradu tenaga, Kolej berjaya menjadi johan tahun 1981 setelah menumpaskan MTD dengan kiraan mata 79 - 54, satu rekod perbezaan mata terbesar untuk perlawanan akhir dalam sejarah bola keranjang Kolej Melayu.  Piala Hamdan Tahir sekali lagi pulang ke pangkuan Kolej Melayu untuk kali ketiga.

18hb April

Kontijen bertolak balik meninggalkan bandar Sungai Petani dengan seribu satu kenangan pahit dan manis, suka dan duka.  Kemenangan dan kekalahan memang menjadi adat pertandingan.  Namun begitu, sebahagian dari impian telah menjadi kenyataan.  Semoga tahun 1982 akan membawa kejayaan yang lebih cemerlang.

Pesta Perdana 1979

Pada tahun ini buat pertama kalinya, Pertandingan Perbahasan Piala Perdana Menteri dan Pertandingan Bola Keranjang Piala Tan Sri Hamdan Tahir/Puan Sri Zainab dijalankan serentak.  Sesungguhnya pesta ini adalah yang paling meriah yang pernah disertai oleh sekolah-sekolah berasrama penuh di Malaysia.  SDAR, Seremban diberi kepercayaan untuk menganjurkannya.

Kontijen Kolej yang seramai tiga puluh orang telah bertolak dengan Bas Kolej pada pagi 30hb Mac dengan harapan tinggi untuk membawa balik Piala Perdana Menteri dan Piala Hamdan Tahir.  Pada jam 6.30 petang itu, Bas Kolej yang gagah perkasa itu sampai di pintu gerbang SDAR dan kami diberikan sambutan yang baik oleh jawatankuasa pesta tersebut.

Suasana di sekitar sekolah tersebut amat menggembirakan.  Ahli-ahli dari tiap kontijen beramah mesra dan berkenalan antara satu sama lain.  Di sana sini kelihatan kelumpuk-­kelumpuk pelajar (kenalan lama) berbualbicara.  Tetapi, keadaan manis itu telah diredupi oleh berita kemangkatan DYMM Seri Paduka Yang Di Pertuan Agung.  Untuk menghurmati kemangkatan baginda, pembukaan rasmi Pesta Perdana telah ditangguhkan.

Pada petang hari pertama 1hb April, kontijen kita bertolak ke kampus KTK untuk perlawanan bola keranjang dengan SMSAH Jitra.  Kolej menang dengan amat mudah sekali; 101 - 15.  Hari yang menggembirakan bagi kontijen kita.  Pada malam itu seluruh kontijen kita beristi­rehat menunggu perlawanan-perlawanan yang bakal diadakan esuk.

Pada hari yang kedua,  pada sebelah petangnya pula pasukan bola keranjang kita menewaskan pasukan SMS N. Sembilan.  Kolej yang hanya menurunkan pasukan pelapis menang 85 - 43. 

3hb April ialah Hari Perasmian Pesta Perdana.  Kolej diwakili oleh Tuan Pengetua, En. Mohd Amin dan lima orang pelajar. Selepas perasmian, pasukan pelapis bola keranjang Kolej telah mengalahkan SMS Pahang 48 - 39.  Pada petang itu Kolej, menurunkan kembali pemain-pemain utama, menumpaskan STAR dalam perlawanan bola keranjang.  Jaringan ialah 80 - 70.

4hb April, sebuah talentime telah diadakan.  Kolej diwakili oleh Sdr Mohd. Ali Hanafiah.  Beliau berjaya menduduki tempat ketiga.  Tahniah diucapkan.  Kemudian, pada petangnya, Kolej, kembali diwakili oleh pemain pelapis, menewaskan SMS Melaka 86 - 70 dalam perlawanan bola keranjang.

5hb April, Pasukan bola keranjang Kolej berjaya memasuki perlawanan separuh akhir bila mereka berjaya menundukkan pasukan SMS Selangor 98 - 73. Pada petangnya pula, Kolej layak ke perlawanan akhir bola keranjang selepas menundukkan SMS P. Pinang 85 – 75 dalam pertandingan separuh akhir.

6hb April; Pertemuan dua jaguh bola keranjang yang tiada saingnya - KMKK dan MTD.  Pertemuan ini ialah yang ketiga di peringkat akhir.  Pada tahun 77, KMKK menang.  Tahun lalu, Kolej kurang bernasib baik.  Pemain-pemain kita telah bermain dengan penuh semangat. Di tambah pula oleh sokongan dari sebahagian dari penuntun, pemain-pemain seperti Nik Rushdi, Mohd Shah dan Aziz Saleh khasnya telah menunjukkan ‘form’ yang baik.  Akhirnya, bila wisel penamat dibunyikan, Kolej berjaya menewaskan MTD 76 - 68.  Piala Hamdan Tahir pulang semula ke pangkuan kita! Diupacara penutup, kami beramai-ramai menyanyikan lagu Kolej Melayu dengan bangganya.

Untuk meraikan kemenangan yang telah dicapai oleh pasukan bahas dan bola keranjang, Tuan Pengetua telah membawa seluruh kontijen Kolej ke Bilal Restaurant Seremban pada sebelah malamnya.  Selepas itu, kontijen kita berkemas-kemas untuk pulang pada esuk harinya.  Kebanyakan ahli kontijen kita mengambil peluang terakhir ini untuk bertemu dengan kenalan masing-masing untuk mengucapkan ‘hingga jumpa lagi’.

Pada pagi hari esuknya, kontijen kita berangkat pulang dengan kenangan-kenangan manis yang mengusik jiwa.........

THE PIALA TAN SRI HAMDAN BIN SHEIKH TAHIR - 1977

The Piala Tan Sri Hamdan bin Sheikh Tahir was first introduced in 1974. The event initiated at Sekolah Alam Shah, Cheras where SDAR emerged as victors followed by RMC and The Malay College. The following two years, first at RMC and then Sdar, saw again a similar result; the same three schools in the same order. In 1976, another trophy was introduced for the girls of residential schools of which the victorious STF unrivalledly secured. This year saw differently as the affair unfolded in the grounds of STAR, Ipoh.

The Malay College was placed in the B group along with three other favorites for the title. At the first light of the following day, July 18th the team equipped themselves for the first game against SMS Selangor. As the game commenced at the Raja Chulan school court, the team somehow found difficulty in adapting to the court and play. During the game, Ikmal Hakimi our left guard was injured and was unable to play for the rest of the tournament. The first game was won with the score of 70-63.  That evening, the same day The Malay met SMS Kedah. Although playing under the hot broiling sun the whole team especially Johari and Riza Beg played well but the game was considerably slow, as both team showed clear signs of exhaustion. At the end, college won 73 - 60.

On July 19th; against SMS Melaka, The Malay College emerged victorious again with the score 131-31. After a somewhat brief but formal opening ceremony where the distinguished guest witnessed the parade of participating teams, college went against SMS Pahang and won 60 - 44.

The game against RMC today was a crucial one for RMC was this year’s favorites and they too had not lost a single game. On July 20th, at the Raja Chulan court, the game advanced rather warily, with points increasing steadily even on both sides. Johari played magnificently but was faced with a 5 fouls threat bitterly, the expectant appallingly happened in the last minute with an even score of 61 - 61 and was replaced by Nik Rushdi. A foul by their player led to a penalty throw which was taken by Nik. Both shots went in; college led 63 - 61 with barely 30 seconds left. Another basket put the team ahead 65 - 61 and when the whistle blew it ended a fight not to be easily forgotten by both teams. That evening against SMS Penang, the team struggled to contain the attacks launch against us. With their infallible ball handling and baseline tactics, they led until the 18th. minute of the second half. College, proceeding persistently, through an intercepted ball, Hasman sank the winning one. Another basket confirmed the win. Score 65 - 62. The Malay College was in the semi finals.

The game against STAR in the first few minutes was incredibly even, but as it continued STAR led considerably. In the second half the situation changed as suddenly our score escalated and college took the lead. The final score: 73-67. College was in the finals. RMC too had qualified for the finals after defeating Sdar in the semi finals.

The day of the finals, the 22nd of July, RMC clad in red entered the court. The Malay College differently in white. Precisely 5.00 pm, at the starting whistle Johari won the throw up. But in the tussle the opposition grasped the opportunity to score the first basket. Counteracting Wahid dribbled up and with a long shot over their zone defence, sank the first basket for college. Not the least deterred RMC hastily answered. The game proceeded with both constantly attacking and one ever guarding to contain the other. The battle of the first half ended in favor of college. In the second half RMC turned to ‘man-to-man’ but still the lead kept changing hands. By-then three RMC players were sent off for committing five fouls. With only a minute remaining, the lead seesawed into RMC’s favor; 60-63. Attacking, the ball was brought to the baseline of their half, with only 50 seconds left, a mistake in their defence and Hasman scored a basket; 62-63. Following that, due to a foul, a free throw was given to Aziz. Everybody held their breath as the first ball hits the back rim and bounced off. The second throw went in the third, wavered slightly but sank in too and the last 15 seconds ticked away. When the final whistle blew, jubilant college supporters streamed into the court and shared tearful hugs with the players.

After the closing ceremony and the last dinner, our headmaster treated the whole team to a celebrating feast.

Lastly, we would like to express our utmost gratitude to Mr. Tan, who with his strategy and guidance brought us to the champion­ship, to Mr. Liew whom we owe too much and whose invaluable help, shall always be remembered, to our license officer Ahmad who had been beside us till the end, to the Red Crescent of STAR who helped Riza Beg, to the students and the headmaster of the Raja Chulan school who had been very kind to us all through the tournament and to next year’s team, good luck and play hard.

MCOBA Cagers 2011

MCOBA Cagers are playing in the ongoing NCBL (National Community Basketball League).  This is our the second year we are playing in this league. Last year we didn't make it to the second round. This year, Alhamdulillah, we managed to improve ourselves a step better by qualifying for the second round.

Cagers won their first game against SMSTMFP, Kelantan 43 - 18.  They started badly, again. Missed their shots and made unforced mistakes. They lost the first quarter 6 - 8.
Luckily they managed to regroup in the second quarter and played good defense to hold Faris scoreless in the 2nd quarter.  They Cagers build a big lead at the half.
Some starters were rested at the start of third quarter. The second team took over and maintain the pressure. Razzin played well to control the offensive board.
Overall Cagers need to start better and pressure the opponent. Next game against SEMASHUR..
Update:
Cagers won against SEMASHUR 45 -21. The first game jitters are gone. Cagers took off flying at the jumpball.  They pressured SEMASHUR into making mistakes and execute their offence superbly. Abang and Hisyam began hitting the threes. They allowed SEMASHUR to only 1 point in the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter, Cagers continued the good play to frustrate SEMASHUR further.  They lead by 25 points at the half.  Second team took over at the second half and managed to play as well as the first team.

Update:
Cagers continued the good start against Kuching. Danial exerted himself early to send a warning to Kuching.  Abang and Hisyam continued hitting the threes. Iqbal did the damages inside quietly. Apes was flying in from the left for easy lay ups. They overwhelmed the defending champion early. Cagers led by 25 point at the half.  The second team took over again in the second half.  This time they couldn't match the scoring power of the first team. However they managed to match SMS Kuching basket per basket. Final score Cagers won 44-22.
Next game against SEMSAS.
Update
Cagers started sluggishly after playing the best game in the tournament against defending champion SMS Kuching last night.  They just couldn't get going, luckily they defended well. They led 7 - 6 after 1st quarter. The  Cagers couldn't shake of the sluggishness and continued their slumber in the 2nd quarter. They managed to lead 20 - 16 at the half.  The captain struggled to inject some life into the team.  The pep talk during half time didn't seem to be effective. Cagers managed to nurse a slim lead 34 - 28 after 3rd quarter.  2 mins left in the fourth quarter, Cagers led 41 - 32. A miscommunication between the manager and the players.  The manager persuaded the coach to leave the Cagers' bench, after replacing the first team with the second team.  The second team couldn't handle the pressure without the coach on the bench.  They crumbled and SEMSAS scored the last 12 points within the last 2 minutes to win 44 - 41.

It was the worst game for the Cagers in the tournament after being left coachless in the last minute....Luckily they've won with a big margin against SMS Kuching so they can afford to lose this game with a small margin and still top the group.
SEMIFINAL
Cagers started cautiously against SEMASHUR after playing the worst game earlier in the morning against SEMSAS.  Hisyam and Iqbal played well in the first to keep the Cagers ahead 23 - 17.  Danial took over in the second quarter to keep the lead 43 - 25.  Cagers struggled when the second team played in the 3rd quarter, despite a tremendous effort from Razzin. The lead narrowed to 58 - 42 after 3rd quarter.  Razzin continued his superb rebounding to keep the Cagers on front.  The second team managed to keep SEMASHUR at bay to win 81 - 56.
FINAL
Cagers (Hisyam, Apes, Iqbal, Abang and Danial) started well against SDAR.  Iqbal dominated the inside game against the bigger SDAR players with his fakes and turning.  Cagers hit 3 3-pointers in the quarter (2 by abang and 1 from Hisyam).  Cagers led 15 - 10 after the 1st quarter.  Cagers struggled in the second quarter.  The main players were in foul-troubles trying to contain the SDAR players. Abang managed to hit 1 3-pointer in the quarter. Cagers led 28 - 23 at the half.
SDAR began closing in during the 3rd quarter.  Luckily for Cagers, they managed to hit another 3 3-pointers (2 by Abang and 1 from Hisyam) in the quarter to keep SDAR at bay Cagers led narrowly 42 - 41 after the 3rd quarter.  SDAR managed to regain the lead temporarily in the 4th quarter.  All of sudden the Cagers started to hit 3-pointers to frustrate SDAR whenever they took the lead or closing in.  The Cagers managed to hit 6 more 3-pointers in the quarter (4 by Abang and 2 from Hisyam), including 4 consecutively.  SDAR couldn't answer the 3-points barrage from the Cagers.  SDAR used their size well to keep the score close by scoring inside freely when 2 main Cagers, Razzin and Danial, fouled out.  Abang was playing with 4 fouls in the last 5 minutes.  Final score Cagers 65 SDAR 58.
Cagers created a record by hitting a total of 13 3-pointers in the game (more than the Lakers in their game against Mavericks).  The most ever by Cagers in the history, with Abang hitting 9 of them and Hisyam 4.  It was a good final game.  Abang was chosen the MVP for the tournament.

Received the Piala Hamdan 2011 schedule from Medi 84 (thanks a lot, Medi).

Cagers were grouped together with SEMASHUR and SMSTMFP.  This is the 3rd consecutive year we are grouped together with SEMASHUR. Cagers lost in 2009, won twice in 2010.  This year would be interesting.  For the first time in Q4G history, we have a good average height of Cagers 2011.  Most of them are taller than me ( I must have shrunk with age!).  They have 4 of them can touch the Ring! Previously we have 2 at the most (correct me if I'm wrong).

Now they have to prove their potential on the court.  All the best Cagers 2011
